The sounds of baseball are back, with a group of early-arriving Yankees already shaking off the winter chill at the club’s player development complex.
One of their offseason minor league signings, Ernesto Martinez Jr., is one of them. Martinez, 26, has yet to make his Major League debut but is knocking at the door, getting his first taste of Triple-A last season in the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
Cody Bellinger has signaled he will not play for Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, choosing instead to focus on his responsibilities with the New York Yankees and a championship pursuit in the Bronx.
According to Zack Raab on X, 26-year-old Harrison Cohen will pitch for Israel in the WBC. Baseball America ranks the Yankees' right-hander as their No. 20 prospect in the minor league system. Cohen had a 1.57 ERA and struck out 29 batters in 28.2 innings last season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
One of the New York Yankees’ key players, Austin Wells, now knows exactly which national team he will represent at the 2026 World Baseball Classic—a decision that would be highly favorable for the team he chose.
Austin Wells isn't from the Dominican Republic. Wells was born in Scottsdale, Arizona and he attended high school at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas before playing collegiately at the University of Arizona. He does have Dominican heritage, though. Wells can suit up for the Dominican Republic because his mother is Dominican.
