Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy captured the viral shot in Arizona, perfectly aligning skydiver Gabriel Brown with the blazing surface of the Sun, a moment he titled ‘The Fall of Icarus’. H-alpha captures the deep red light that nebula give off when hydrogen gas is energised by nearby stars. Massive stars blast the surrounding clouds with UV light, which excites the hydrogen atoms. When they calm back down, they release light at a very specific wavelength — 656nm — the H-alpha line. With my R6ii H-alpha mod from Spencer's Camera and an Antlia 3nm filter, I can isolate just that emission.
